Colour Shampoo

Box dye turns a bathroom into a project: gloves, a mixing bottle, a towel you have written off and half an hour of watching the clock. A colour shampoo folds the job back into something you already do. Work it through, leave it about ten minutes, rinse, and the sink looks the way it did before you started.

The formula leaves out ammonia and peroxide, the ingredients that force the hair cuticle open to push pigment in and leave hair dry and brittle after repeated use. In their place it carries plant extracts — fo-ti, ganoderma, black sesame, saponin from soapberries and ginseng — chosen to condition hair and scalp while the colour goes on, so the hair is left soft rather than stripped.

Five shades are available: black, dark brown, light brown, red and purple. Carry out a strand test and a patch test before the first full application, keep the product out of the eyes, and rinse thoroughly afterwards. Results vary with your natural colour, hair texture and how much grey is being covered, and colour built up over several applications generally holds better than one long first session.
