Absorbent Anti-Slip Doormat

Most of the dirt in a house arrives on shoes in the first two metres past the door. A doormat that only brushes the sole lets the water through, which is how a hallway floor ends up streaked every wet morning. An absorbent surface holds the moisture and the mud instead of passing them on.

The pile is dense enough to pull water, grit and mud off a shoe rather than redistributing it, and soft enough to be comfortable to stand on barefoot, which matters at an interior door. Underneath, a rubber backing grips the floor so the mat does not skid when somebody steps onto it at speed — the thing that makes a loose mat on a hard floor genuinely hazardous.

It is made from durable polypropylene, which handles heavy foot traffic without matting flat, and the whole mat goes in the washing machine when it needs it. Three sizes are available: 50 x 80 cm for a standard doorway, 60 x 90 cm for a wider entrance, and 80 x 120 cm for a hallway run. Shake it out regularly, and make sure it lies flat and fully seated before use.
