Hands-Free Neck Magnifier

The problem with a handheld magnifier is arithmetic: close work needs two hands, and the magnifier takes one of them. This hangs from the neck on a padded strap and holds the lens in front of the work on a flexible gooseneck, which gives both hands back and removes the constant repositioning that makes detailed work tiring.

The lens is optical-grade acrylic at 5x magnification, 13 cm across. That diameter matters more than the magnification number: a wide lens holds a whole line of text or a whole section of embroidery, so you read and work rather than panning across a page through a keyhole. The optics are clear to the edge without the distortion cheap plastic lenses show at the rim.

There are three ways to use it: worn around the neck for hands-free work, stood on a table for a fixed viewing position, or detached and held like a conventional magnifier. The silicone-coated gooseneck holds any angle, sitting, standing or lying down. It needs no batteries and no power, so there is nothing to charge and nothing to fail. Keep the lens clean with a soft cloth.
